PowerPC Ubuntu Installation on PowerPC Mac Mini

Just my quick notes:

PowerPC Linux on Mac Mini, 7447a, September 9, 2016

  • I haven’t had success with high resolution monitors, I had to use a 1024x768 monitor and the 1280x1024 monitor from work also functioned correctly
  • ISO Image for Ubuntu Power 14.05 from Ubuntu
  • live radeon.agpmode=-1
  • You need the radeon.agpmode=-1 to keep the graphics from locking up.
  • Double click the install icon on the desktop
  • Don’t add extra options like download the packages while installing.
  • You may have to manually erase all partitions, if it’s getting hung up go into the advanced (manual) partition setup, erase all the partitions and start the installation from scratch.
  • Create the encrypted disk, default partitions
  • Encrypt home directories
  • Boot the installation with “Linux radeon.agpmode=-1 video=radeonfb:1024x768”
  • Edit /etc/yaboot.cnf, find the “append=“ and add “radeon.agpmode=-1 video=radeonfb:1024x768”
  • /bin/ybin -v to update the kernel

Find where a routine is defined in shared libraries.


I can't find a reasonable Linux command that will let me search all the shared libraries defined by the ld.conf configuration and LD_LIBRARY_PATH. I keep ending up grep'ing through all the directories. So here is a short script on github:

Installing Apple Packages Remotely

I have a Mac that I maintain remotely and I have been using the command line software update to install the standard Mac updates.

# softwareupdate --list

# softwareupdate --install --all

I didn't know I could do the same thing for packages until this morning when the 10.7.4 update broke one of my macs in a weird way. I could do many things as long I didn't touch the menu bar or some dialog boxes. If I did, the program seemed to hang in using the shader compiler to send stuff to the ATI chip.

I downloaded the 10.7.4 Combo Update from Apple, but I could not launch the Installer.

I found out I can run package updates from the command line.

MarsEdit - New Favorite Blog Tool

My old favorite Blogo, appears to now be a dead product. It doesn't work with Mac OS X Lion, and there doesn't seem to be any activity to fix it.

I also give MarsEdit extra points for being available in the Mac App store.

 

Manually Deleting Mac Applications

 

My quick list of things to look for when deleting Mac applications manually. Most mac applications seem well behaved and only populate things in /Applications and maybe a couple things in ~/Library. Other applications seems to try to put things in all sort of directories and even their own uninstaller doesn't clean up after them. Today's problem child is Mark/Space's Missing Sync. I ran the uninstaller, but it left behind a lot of stuff. So this is just my list of places to go look to uninstall the remaining pieces of applications.

  • First look to see if they have an uninstaller in /Applications
  • Re-download the package and see if the package comes with an uninstaller.
  • Applications, look for Applications and Folders named for what you want to uninstall.
  • Run AppZapper if there is no uninstaller
  • /Library/Application Support
  • /Library/Frameworks
  • /Library/Preferences
  • /Library/LaunchAgents
  • /Library/LaunchDaemons
  • /System/Library/Extensions
  • ~/Library/Application Support
  • ~/Library/Preferences

A very good description of a simple use of autoconf and automake:

The problem with autotools is that it is used for complicated things, and people cut-and-paste complicated things even when they ought to be simple. 99% of people just need a way to access .pc files and generate juicy Makefiles, the portability part is taken care by glib, sdl and so on.

The most basic autotools setup is 9 lines.

configure.ac:

Time Machine Restore - A Pleasant Experience


I recently had a disk go bad in my iMac. The disk would often boot if the computer was cold but then would start having errors as it warmed up and ... corrupting files.

I have never had to test any of my Time Machine backups for a real purpose. I was concerned that I would find that not all the files I needed would be restored or I would find I only really had partial backups. I have had many bad experiences over the years with untested backups, including backups done by sys admins. So I doubted that Apple's magic backup would be complete.

So I stuck a blank hard disk in the machine and booted the 10.5 install CD. At this point you have two options, install a fresh copy of Mac OS X and restore your files and settings, or just restore everything from Time Machine. I chose to restore everything from Time Machine, started it and went to bed.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a complete restore. I had to resync my dot mac data and a couple little things. The worst one was the ~/Library/Caches directory was not created with permissions for me to write to it. But overall, I was very happy.

Parsing a binary file in Perl

This is an example of how to parse a binary file in perl. This reads an mpeg-2 file and chops the first 8 Mbyte chunk out of the file, closing at the next clean sequence header boundary.

Logging Serial Data with CKermit

To log binary serial data from an RS-232 stream using CKermit, these are the settings I use:

  • set port /dev/ttyS0
  • set baud 115200
  • set terminal bytesize 8
  • set command bytesize 8
  • set parity none
  • set session-log binary
  • set flow-control none

Then when you are ready:

  • log session
  • connect
